How the calculator works
- Hourly rate: annual salary multiplied by 6/12520, the formula in Part 11 of Annex F to the Police Regulations 2003.
- Who can claim: only constables and sergeants are eligible for overtime, under Annex G to the Police Regulations 2003. Inspectors and above are not.
- Casual overtime: paid for each completed 15 minutes. On each of the first four occasions in a week, the first 30 minutes are disregarded unless you were told in advance. Enter the hours you will be paid for.
- Unsocial hours: 10% of your hourly rate for every full hour worked between 8pm and 6am.
- Tax and NI: income tax at 20%, 40% or 45% and National Insurance at 8% or 2%, using the 2026 to 2027 thresholds. The tax rate is set from your salary plus the overtime (40% above £50,270 and 45% above £125,140). Change it if your tax code differs. The rate is applied to all of the overtime.
- Student loans: 9% for Plans 1, 2, 4 and 5, and 6% for a Postgraduate Loan, on the part of your pay above the plan threshold.
- Nothing you enter is saved or sent anywhere. Refreshing the page clears it.
